The English and Welsh Placed Together for RWC 2027 in Australia

Draw event for the 2027 tournament
The pool stage draw was overseen by rugby icons such as former All Black Dan Carter.

The English side and their Welsh counterparts will face off in an identical pool for the World Cup in 2027, promising a major early encounter in the tournament Down Under. They are joined in Pool F by the Tongan Ikale Tahi and Zimbabwe.

This draw mirrors their famous clash in the pool stages of the 2015 tournament, where Wales' victory at England's home ground played a part in the hosts' shock early exit.

Key Group Draws

The Irish and Scotland also share a group once again, just as the situation from the 2023 edition. On that occasion, they claimed a 36-14 victory, with Scotland failing to advance to the knockout stages.

Uruguay and Portugal, who each impressed as surprise packages in France, complete that Pool D.

Notably, the victors of both Pool D and Pool F cannot meet holders and top-ranked the Springboks until the final, presuming the South Africans top their own group.

Tournament Implications

Should the groups conclude according to the current global standings, other top favourites like the All Blacks and Les Bleus would also be kept apart from both the English and Ireland until the championship decider.

In that scenario, Argentina would be the remaining highly-seeded nation on the same half of the elimination bracket as England and Ireland.

Hosts Draw Major Fixture

Hosts the Wallabies have been drawn alongside their trans-Tasman rivals and triple champions New Zealand in Pool A.

Australia will kick off the tournament in Perth on October 1st, 2027 in a blockbuster fixture aimed at launch the competition.

Elsewhere, reigning champions the Springboks have drawn Italy, Georgia and the Oaks. France are in a pool with the Brave Blossoms, 2031 hosts the USA and Samoa.

Expanded Format for 2027

Los Pumas will take on Fiji, Spain and the Canadian team as the World Cup grows to 24 teams from the 20 who competed in 2023.

This edition will feature a round of 16 stage for the first time in the competition's history.

Although the victor of Pool F may avoid some of the rugby's heavyweights initially, they will meet the second-placed team from Group B – most likely Italy – in the first knockout round.

A total of four of the other six group winners will face a team that finished third from the pool stages.
