Royal Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have operated alongside French aircraft in a joint strike on an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory operated by the IS group, as stated by the UK Ministry of Defence.
The facility, identified by surveillance, was assessed as storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was situated in mountains just to the north of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.
"Our aircraft utilized precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to strike a number of access tunnels providing entry to the facility... initial indications are that the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.
There was no sign of any harm to civilians in the operation late on Saturday and every plane involved returned safely, the defence officials confirmed.
The Typhoon fighters were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.
IS - alternatively referred to as the so-called Islamic State - established extremist governance over significant areas in both Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.
"This strike shows our UK leadership, and resolve to operate in unison with our partners, to stamp out any revival of IS and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the area," UK Defence Secretary the minister said.
RAF aircraft have performed overwatch operations over Syria to "deter any efforts to regroup" of the group following its defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.
"I must thank all the members of British forces who took part in this mission for their skill and their valour," Healey said. "Including them were numerous UK service members stationed over the festive period. This mission, to remove terrorist threats who endanger our safety, demonstrates how British military are ready to step up, throughout the year, ensuring Britain's security at home and strong abroad."
Last December, the American forces carried out what it described as a "massive strike" on Daesh sites in the country, following an attack killed two US troops and a local interpreter in Palmyra.
The U.N. says Daesh still maintains an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in Iraq and Syria.
