Fed Cuts Interest Rates for Second Time This Year Amid Economic Uncertainty

The US central bank lowered interest rates on Wednesday, representing the second reduction this year amid financial volatility stemming from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.

Move Arrives at Extraordinary Moment for Central Bank

The decision to reduce the key rate by a quarter point to a range of 3.75% to 4% comes at an extraordinary moment for the Fed. The authority has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs even with persistent inflation.

Fed Statement Notes Labor Market Shifts

In a announcement, the Fed stated that the unemployment rate had increased but remains low. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the statement notes. “Price increases has moved up and remains somewhat elevated.”

Government Shutdown Hinders Central Bank’s Task

The ongoing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Gathering of important economic data has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the BLS are furloughed during the shutdown.

Data Gap Affects Monetary Moves

The Fed typically studies BLS data to determine employment trends, including the number of new jobs created to the market and the present jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was published in early September, prior to the closure, and gave a relatively bleak snapshot of the jobs market in August.

The number of positions added to the economy in the summer month was down by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and unemployment crept up to 4.3% – the peak since three years ago.

Private Data Show Ongoing Slowdown

Though BLS was scheduled to publish September’s employment data in the start of last month, it suspended its publication when the closure started. Employment data company ADP reported recently that the business segment eliminated 32,000 positions in last month, a sign that the job market is still decelerating.

“Supply as well as demand for workers has fallen significantly,” central bank head Jerome Powell stated earlier this month, a trend he had previously said comes from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Reveals Moderate Increase

Though the bureau’s employment data has been paused, the agency still released its price statistics for last month that indicated that costs are rising, although gradually. Prices rose 3% over the last year, the highest since January. In spring, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The Fed’s target inflation rate is two percent.
